LEWISTON, Maine — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Safe Voices, a domestic violence and sex-trafficking resource center, held a vigil Monday afternoon in Lewiston to honor those who have died from domestic violence and support those who are surviving it.
Safe Voices said they worked with over 2,700 survivors in Maine just last year.
“They are so strong, they are so graceful and resilient in how they are recovering from this abuse,” Safe Voices Director of Development Grace Kendall said.
Kendall said community response is crucial to stopping abuse.
“It’s neighbors making sure neighbors know that domestic violence is not okay in our community and that it’s not a private issue. It really is a community safety and community health issue,” Kendall said.
Safe Voices is one of several members of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence. All ten members are listed below:
- Hope and Justice Project (Aroostook County)
