Safe Voices believes that addressing the root cause of violence through education and training is a vital part of our efforts to support survivors and end domestic abuse. Our education team offers several options in support of that belief, including school-based education designed at age-appropriate levels from grades K through 12, higher ed training options for student leaders like Resident Assistants, and workplace trainings for businesses and offices who want staff to be aware of resources available for survivors, skills for supporting survivors in the workplace, and more.
Education and trainings are free to schools, nonprofits, government agencies, and businesses within our service area of Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford Counties.
School-Based Education
Safe Voices’ educators are available for K-12 education, each designed to be age-appropriate and to tailor lesson plans to real world issues students may be experiencing. Some of our lesson modules include:
For grades K-3:
- Balancing wants and needs for yourself and others (with a focus on identifying healthy boundaries)
- Using your voice to stand up for yourself and others
For grades 4-6:
- Healthy and unhealthy relationships within family and friend groups
For grades 7-8:
- Healthy and unhealthy relationships within the dating world
For grades 9-12:
- Dating abuse and violence overview. What is it, and how to get help if you experience it?
- How power and control can shape relationships
For Higher Education:
- Skills-based trainings for any department, including student-facing staff, dorm Resident Assistants, HR, and more. Trainings can be aimed to help staff respond to intimate partner abuse when it is witnessed or disclosed.
Community-Based Education
Safe Voices offers several options for community partners, businesses, and groups to access training about domestic abuse and sex trafficking in our communities. Some of our lesson modules include:
DV 101: A broad overview of domestic abuse and violence, the dynamics at play in such relationships, resources available for survivors and survivor-supporters, and more.
HT 101: A broad overview of human sex trafficking and what this issue looks like in the state of Maine. This presentation offers tips on recognizing warning signs, as well as resources that are available for survivors of sex trafficking and concerned others.
DV in the Workplace: Domestic abusers will often utilize financial abuse to control and harm their victims, and this may include attempts to undermine the survivor’s employment and their ability to support themselves. This training offers resources for employers to recognize this issue and support staff members who may be experiencing abuse.
Post-Separation Abuse: An overview to understand post-separation abuse, why and how it happens, and how survivors can be supported when they experience this.
Abuse in Later Life: An overview of what abuse in later life (also known as “elder abuse”) is, how it might appear, and what elders and their loved ones can do to avoid it.
Customized Training: If none of the above fit your organization’s needs, we can customize a training to what would be most useful. Please contact us for more information.
Tabling: Are you having a community event? Block party? Parade? And are you looking for local organizations to come and table with information and resources about their services? Please fill out the form below!
Drop-ins: Safe Voices educators are available to hold regular drop-ins for youth if your organization or agency has a population who could benefit from regular contacts. Please fill out the form below.
